With each new software purchase, there are questions regarding its use. Help Notes answers common questions concerning the use of the Gardening Clipart series.
The graphics files are saved in two formats TIFF and gif. These file types are two of the most common graphics file formats used for print and web design. Most of the programs you will be using will accept these formats.
To operate this CD-ROM on a PC, you will need to be running Unix, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT. In addition, you will need a CD-ROM drive. It is helpful to have at least 24 Megs of RAM and enough disk space to handle the type of work you will be producing. To operate this CD-ROM on a Mac will require some experimentation on your part. This product was created on a PC and will run, from our experience on high-end Macs using higher-quality software. It will not load into older, lower-end Macs.
The CD's are organized into easy to read directories. For example, Gardening Clipart Collection I is organized into five directories with several sub-directories within each category:
Each of these directories is organized into a variety of sub-directories by plant type:
There is nothing to load onto your computer; Gardening Clipart works in conjunction with word processing, paint and drawing programs. All images are stored on the CD-ROM until you choose a file. Only the chosen file is imported into your document. This method of handling the artwork saves tremendously on your valuable disk space. 1. Decide upon an image using the reference guide that comes with the CD-ROM. 2. Then, find the directory in which that image is located. (See the heading (annuals, bulbs, etc.) of the section you are looking at in the reference guide). 3. Each sub-directory has been set up for ease of use. One can easily find the correct sub-directory based on the name of the flower. For example: On Gardening Clipart, Collection I, Pansies are in the PANSIES sub-directory. The path will be annuals/pansies/filename.tif or filename.gif. Asiatic Lilies are in the Lilies sub-directory. The path will be bulbs/lilies/filename.tif or filename.gif. Each image path uses the same premise. NOTE: Gardening Clipart is not intended as a botanically correct work. It is intended to be used as artwork that is pleasing in appearance and represents many of the aspects of the plant as seen close-up in a garden.
Getting the Files into your Document Depending on the software, there are three ways to get your image into a document. These methods include: simply open the file use the ‘import’ function use the ‘place’ function Make sure the software accepts TIF and gif files, find the correct path and use one of the methods described above to place the image in your document. If the software you are using does not accept TIF and gif file formats, you can get around this problem if you have another program that does accept TIF and gif files. Open the program that accepts TIF and gif files. Cut or copy the image on to the clipboard. Close this program and open the program in which you want the image to be placed. Using the paste command, paste the image into this document. This is a round about way of getting the file into your program, but it works.
Getting the most out of an image The file type you use will depend on how you plan to use the image. All images have been saved in a manner that gives the smallest file size possible without sacrificing quality. There are three simple rules to follow when using any clip art if you want to retain the quality of a bitmap image: 1. Enlarge images cautiously. If you do enlarge an image, expect to see the "jaggies" around your image. 2. Use image editing software when reducing the size of your image. When you use image editing software to change the size, it will also reduce the number of pixels, therefore the size of the file. 3. Once an image has been reduced in size, do not try to enlarge it again. Use the original image off of the CD.
